Finland is emerging as a key player in the development of the hydrogen economy in Europe. Green hydrogen, primarily produced through electrolysis, involves separating hydrogen from water using emission-free electricity. Northern Europe – and Finland in particular – offers ideal conditions for this. The region boasts abundant water resources, while Finland already produces a significant amount of emission-free electricity from wind and solar power, with the potential for exponential growth in renewable energy production.

Finland’s extensive and stable electricity grid enhances the economic feasibility of hydrogen production. Additionally, numerous new wind and solar power projects are in development. Existing and planned electricity and gas infrastructure further accelerate the growth of the hydrogen economy. Biogenic carbon dioxide from forest industry side streams is becoming an increasingly valuable resource for hydrogen refinement. Moreover, Finland's widespread district heating networks in cities and industrial areas enable the utilization of waste heat from hydrogen plants, increasing efficiency and boosting profitability.

Until now, Finland has lacked a dedicated platform to bring together the hydrogen ecosystem – an event where people, ideas, and inspiration converge to advance the hydrogen economy. That is about to change.

Hydrogen Summit & Expo in Tampere, January 22–23, 2025

Join us in shaping Finland’s and Europe’s hydrogen ecosystem! The international Hydrogen Summit & Expo will gather top industry experts, innovators, business leaders, and investors. The conference and expo will feature inspiring presentations by prominent speakers, including ministers Kai Mykkänen and Joakim Strand, alongside representatives from global technology companies and leading investors. The event is set to attract participants from across the hydrogen value chain, including producers, storage and transport specialists, and refiners, as well as investors exploring the sector’s rapidly growing opportunities.

The Hydrogen Summit & Expo will highlight innovations and tackle the challenges influencing the hydrogen ecosystem in Finland and worldwide. This annual event showcases the entire hydrogen economy value chain and fosters collaboration across its sectors. Key partners include H2 Cluster Finland, Business Finland, and Business Tampere.

Business Opportunities from Climate Goals

Stricter climate policies are driving companies to reduce emissions and adopt sustainable practices. At the same time, these policies are opening up numerous new business opportunities. Hydrogen and its derivatives, produced with renewable electricity, are set to replace fossil fuels, decentralizing energy production compared to traditional fossil fuel systems. Without significant advancements in the hydrogen economy, meeting national and international climate targets for the 2030s will be highly challenging, especially in industries like steel and fertilizer production, heat generation, energy storage, and logistics.

Collaboration is essential: The success of hydrogen projects relies on close cooperation among diverse stakeholders, including government authorities, technology providers, and project developers. Building Finland’s hydrogen economy requires coordinated progress across all segments of the ecosystem.

Infrastructure and Investments as Key Enablers of the Hydrogen Economy

Developing hydrogen infrastructure depends heavily on state-owned companies, such as electricity and gas grid operators, as well as the contributions of technology providers. Technological innovation is a critical driver for progress in the hydrogen sector. Foreign capital and funding from the EU’s green transition initiatives often play a crucial role in hydrogen projects. To foster growth, authorities and policymakers must ensure predictability and offer clear guidelines. While many companies are eager to invest in Finland, lengthy permitting processes – sometimes stretching for years – are a significant bottleneck that must be addressed to expedite projects.

Hydrogen industry events provide invaluable opportunities to connect with decision-makers, influence legislation, and gain insights into the energy transition.

A Head Start for Pioneers

Entering the hydrogen economy requires a long-term commitment from businesses. Early steps include securing funding, building a skilled team, and organizing resources and infrastructure. Companies must also prioritize creating a predictable investment environment and ensuring market demand. With hydrogen technologies constantly evolving, most industry players – from plant operators to component manufacturers – begin with smaller-scale projects and expand over time. Businesses willing to take bold steps to develop products and services today will secure a competitive advantage in the future.

Many small companies find the hydrogen economy challenging to navigate. Businesses often struggle to determine where to start or how to integrate into the hydrogen value chain. Strengthening national-level guidance is crucial to better leverage innovations and connect smaller companies with larger projects. Events like the Hydrogen Summit & Expo provide excellent opportunities to learn how the hydrogen economy is being built and how to become a part of it.

Join Us in Building the Hydrogen Ecosystem

Green hydrogen accelerates sustainable economic growth and plays a key role in balancing fluctuations in energy production and consumption within future energy systems. It facilitates the increased integration of solar and wind power, making energy systems more resilient. Hydrogen is widely regarded as a central solution for achieving climate goals and restoring Finland’s economic competitiveness. As a clean energy source, renewable hydrogen generates no carbon dioxide emissions during production or use.

Global demand for green hydrogen is rapidly increasing as countries commit to carbon neutrality by the 2030s. Finland is home to several localized hydrogen projects and regional ecosystem organizations. However, these efforts must align on a national scale while integrating into the international hydrogen value chain through connections such as electricity and gas grids. The Hydrogen Summit & Expo in Tampere highlights this big picture and fosters collaboration to drive the hydrogen economy forward.
